All God's Chillun: Meditations on Negro Spirituals.
by [African American Spirituals] Owens, J. Garfield.

Publisher Information:
Abingdon Press, Nashville: 1971.

A Fine tight copy in a Fine unclipped dust jacket. Through thoughtful meditations, Dr. Owens delves into the heart of African American spirituals to find they are more than simple folk songs. He finds a philosophy of life emanating from the lives of those who were trapped in slavery without hope of salvation except through their belief in God. The author finds that despite their religious center, spirituals were early protest songs that brought African Americans hope in a seemingly hopeless world. Owens uses the lyrics of 27 spirituals to launch his meditations on their significance in the lives of Afican Americans.
