(Bukowski, Charles) Cherkovski, Neeli.
Hank: The Life of Charles Bukowski. A Fine tight copy in a Fine bright unclipped dust jacket. Cherkovski reproduces many of his favorite Bukowski poems and little fragments of prose and then analyzes them insightfully in relation to the Bukowski's life. Cherkovski was a good friend of Bukowski during the late Sixties, and his tales of their exploits together will make the average Bukowski reader jealous. Cherkovski's compassion and respect for his subject are almost heartwarmingly ever-present. He gives fans and nonfans alike another, if not totally different, picture of the great Bukowski.

(Bukowski, Charles) Cherkovski, Neeli.
Whitman's Wild Children. A Fine copy in self-wrap paperback binding. The author (a long-time friend of Bukowski) has written a series of anecdotal profiles on ten important writers including--besides Bukowski-- John Winers, James Broughton, Philip Lamantia, Bob Kaufman, Allen Ginsberg, William Everson, Gregory Corso, Harold Norse, and Lawrence Ferlinghetti. Cherkovski chose these particular authors because each, like Whitman, has taken "his own road" and had little to do with what was thought acceptable in mainstream American culture during the 1940's and 1950's. As in his highly acclaimed biography Bukowski: A Life, Cherkovski draws on personal encounters and his own reactions to individual poems in order to create biographical portraits that are at once enlightening and full of life.

At Terror Street and Agony Way: Poems. A Very Good plus copy of this 2nd state of the paperback issue where the misspelling on the front cover has been corrected with a white label. According to Krumhansl there were only 18 copies of the 1st state with the misprint and 747 copies of the 2nd state. There were also 75 hardcover copies. There is a touch of wear to spine. There are no names or markings to text. 89 pages. In this early collection of poems, Bukowski revisits some of his earlier subjects, but instead of his previous surrealistic mode his work explodes with verbal pyrotechnics shedding a fresh light on his own version of the "lower depths."

Beerspit Night and Cursing: The Correspondence of Charles Bukowski and Sheri Martinelli, 1960-1967. A Fine, unread copy in paperback wraps. While Bukowski needs no special introduction, his correspondent in this collection of letters may not be as well known. Sheri Martinelli was a small press editor (Anagogic & Paideumic) , protegee of Anais Nin, muse and mistress of Ezra Pound, friend of Charlie Parker, and admired by Marlon Brando and the Beat writers. It is with this background that her correspondence with Bukowski rises above the level of pedestrian. The bulk of these letters were written in the first year of their friendship in 1962 then trailed off until they ended in 1967. The letters cover the personal as well as the topics of art and writing. 380 pages.

Factotum. A Fine tight copy in a Fine, unclipped dust jacket. A factotum is a hired hand, an outcast and a loner. One of Charles Bukowski's best, this beer-soaked, deliciously degenerate novel follows the wanderings of aspiring writer Henry Chinaski across World War II-era America. Deferred from military service, Chinaski travels from city to city, moving listlessly from one odd job to another, always needing money but never badly enough to keep a job. His day-to-day existence spirals into an endless litany of pathetic whores, sordid rooms, dreary embraces, and drunken brawls, as he makes his bitter, brilliant way from one drink to the next. Charles Bukowski's posthumous legend continues to grow. Factotum is a masterfully vivid evocation of slow-paced, low-life urbanity and alcoholism, and an excellent introduction to the fictional world of Charles Bukowski. This is Bukowski's unique take on being down and out in America.
