Conquest of the Coeur D'Alenes, Spokans & Palouses. The Expeditions of Colonels E. J. Steptoe and George Wright Against the "Northern Indians" in 1858.

Spokane: John W. Graham & Co., 1912. First Printing of the First US Edition. A Very Good copy with age darkening to the spine and board edges. No dust jacket. Illustrated. In 1858, Colonel Steptoe led a detachment of 164 soldiers to the Washington Territory to engage local tribes but during what is called the Spokane–Coeur d'Alene–Paloos War, a combined force of about 1,000 Coeur d’Alenes, Spokanes, and Palouses attacked and defeated Steptoe at the Battle of Pine Creek. The battle, and the subsequent (successful) retreat, is also known as "the Steptoe Disaster." Author Manning has written a fine history of this event and circumstances that led up to it. Item #21741
