Trans-Himalaya: Discoveries and Adventures in Tibet. Two Volumes.

New York: MacMillan, 1909. First Printing of the First US Edition. Original two volume set in maroon cloth boards with a Tibetan male figure stamped in gold on the front cover. A third volume was published later as a supplement. From 1905-1908, Hedin despite British and Tibetan opposition to his plans, managed to sneak into Tibet, and explored extensively in its southern and western regions. Hedin claimed the discovery of a "previously unknown" major mountain system, the "Trans-Himalaya," and the sources of the major S. Asian rivers, although these claims were then disputed. He explored extensively on and around Lake Manasarovar. Not by his own choice, spent significant time in Shigatse, where he interacted with the Panchen Lama. Hedin had a phenomenal memory and his books, with their vivid details, are still fascinating reading for anyone who is interested in Asian cultures. Item #22567
