London: William Heinemann, 1959. First Printing of the First UK Edition. A Fine tight copy in a Fine bright unclipped dust jacket. Rear-Admiral Sir John Franklin (1786 – 1847) was a British Royal Navy officer and Arctic explorer. Franklin also served as governor of Tasmania for several years. He disappeared on his last expedition, attempting to chart and navigate a section of the Northwest Passage in the Canadian Arctic. The icebound ships were abandoned and the entire crew perished from starvation, hypothermia, tuberculosis, lead poisoning and scurvy. Sir John Franklin made his last Arctic expedition in 1845 and within three years the crew of the expedition had disappeared. Noel Wright provides in this book a history of the various Arctic expeditions beginning in the 16th Century on up to Franklin's disappearance.
