O'Neil of the Fourteenth Infantry and his two reconnaissance expeditions in 1885 and later in 1890 into the Olympic Mountain Range in Northwest Washington State, with much of the account based on the hand-written account kept by Private Harry Fisher. Fisher's account puts the military expedition on a much more personal level regarding the hardships and difficulties as well as some of the humor that made the endeavor bearable.
