Photographer and environmentalist Ansel Adams 1902 - 1984) said his life was "colored and modulated by the great earth gesture" of the Yosemite Sierra. His first visit in 1916, Adams. using a Kodak No. 1 Box Brownie, nearly depleted his pocket money developing film; this we learn from a charming letter to his Aunt Mary reproduced on front cover verso. He joined the Sierra Club in 1919 and was "keeper" of the club's LeConte Memorial Lodge for four consecutive summers; the club was vital to Adams's early success as a photographer and published his first photographs and writings in the club's 1922 Bulletin. This biography is a portrait of Adams through his letters and images. Item #28012
