In 1774 Juan Perez the commander of lone Spanish frigate "Santiago" became the first European to sail the coastal waters of the Pacific Northwest as part of a reconnaissance mission. His failure, however, to make any Northwest landings as he was instructed led to controversy and Perez's tarnished reputation.
