New York: Harper & Brothers, 1854. First Printing of the First US Edition. A Very Good copy in brown cloth binding with gilt stamping on the spine. There is light wear to the extremities, foxing to the front and rear end papers, and some spotting to text block edges. George Washington Bates, a Methodist Episcopal minister, was born inSalisbury, Mass., Oct. 16, 1811. In this early travel account to Hawaii, Bates spent many months touring the Islands in 1853, when it seemed possible that Hawaii would be annexed by the United States. He made personal assessments of financial, social, commercial, sanitation conditions as well as the Island's history. Item #28129
