Richard Hakluyt and the English Voyages. American Geographical Society Special Publication No. 10.

New York: American Geographical Society, 1928. First Printing of the First US Edition. A Very Good copy in grey linen binding with some spotting to the front board and toning. 32 illustrations including three folding maps which are present. Richard Hakluyt (1553-1616) was England’s first travel writer. An ordained priest, Hakluyt was also the chief promoter of English colonization in America, and it’s largely because of his influence and support that the colonies happened in the first place. Hakluyt immediately became fascinated with the Americas, and the discovery of new worlds, and he dedicated himself to reading every travelogue and report about the New World that he could find. He committed to publishing every bit of travel writing he could find, financially supported the early joint-stock companies to fund voyages, and it was his life’s mission to encourage and promote English exploration until he died.
