In 1790, a Boston merchant hired trader Joseph Ingraham to sail to the Pacific Northwest to bring back furs in the brigantine Hope. He visited the Queen Charlotte Islands in July of 1791 and sailed for China in August, hoping to sell his cache, but was stymied by fractious relations between the Chinese and the Russians at the time. He eventually sailed back to Boston, having failed commercially. Ingraham did make some maps and kept a journal. One of his maps helped American claims to the Oregon Territory. Ingraham documents the voyage of the brigantine Hope from Boston to the Falkland Islands; Cape Horn, Chile; Marquesas Islands, French Polynesia; the Northwest Coast of North America; the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii); and China. Documents commercial trade, especially the fur trade, with China. Includes descriptions and drawings of fauna, flora, and inhabitants; charts; and maps of various locations including several Marquesas Islands discovered and named by Ingraham during the voyage.
