McSorley's Wonderful Saloon.
New York: Pantheon, 2001. First edition thus. Fine copy in a Fine unclipped dust jacket. Joseph Mitchell chronicled New York City life in its bars, streets and tenements from the 1930s to the 1950s. He starts his portraits with an unimportant hero, then collects all the facts about him, arranges them to give the desired effects, and usually ends by describing the customs of a whole community. That approach to reportage is what separates Mitchell from all the rest. Item #29080
