Life & Death in the Charity Ward: Stories.
London: London Magazine, 1974. First Printing of the First UK Edition. A Fine copy in a Near Fine bright dust jacket with a touch of fading to the spine. These twenty-nine short stories were originally published in paperback by City Lights Books as "Erections, Ejaculations...." and appear here in the only hardcover edition of this collection. The title story is a gritty, semi-autobiographical account of the author's real-life hospitalization in 1955. At age 35, Bukowski was rushed to the charity ward of the Los Angeles County Hospital, bleeding continuously from his mouth and digestive tract after a decade of severe alcoholism. Item #29488
